80 billion pieces of clothing are consumed each year and that’s a scary amount of raw materials and energy used to meet that demand. Now I am no angel in this fast fashion world, I work in the fashion industry, I’m a blogger who is constantly wearing new items and in turn (sort of) inspiring people on things they might like to purchase. But with all this and the recent headlines and conversation around the subject, I really want to get better at my own fashion consumption.

I’ve come up with some ideas on how I think I can make my personal changes.

Re-selling:
So I pretty much always sell my clothes on Depop/eBay/Mercari (you name it I’ve got the app). I know a lot of people can’t be bothered to put all their clothes on there but I actually enjoy a Sunday afternoon taking photos of my clothes and uploading. This is a great way to re-home your clothes (especially when they’ve only been work a couple of times! Or even just once). The person who’s purchased gets a bargain, the item is rehung in someone else’s wardrobe and not in landfill (not that I would ever throw clothes away!) and you have a few pennies in your pocket. Also side note, you get such a buzz when that ‘Just Sold’ notification comes up (just me?). I actually have 5 bags of clothes that have been sitting in my room for months waiting for someone soul to buy the 200+ items I have on my Depop account. I do normally drop some stuff off to charity shops along the way too - even though my local one wasn’t the most welcoming and it was as if they found it an more of any annoyance I was giving them items of clothing (which sort of left a sour taste in my mouth). So recently I have just been dropping them off in the bin banks at local supermarkets.

Clothing Parties:
I was even thinking of maybe getting my friends together and doing a little clothing party. Whether that’s clothes swaps, charity raising etc. I have a lot of unwanted clothes (stuff I’ve bought in a sample sale that’s too small for me) but my friends would love! Especially in these winter months I think that could be quite a nice little idea. Rather than facing those cold dark evenings out grabbing dinner, you can stay in cosy and have your pals round for a massive fashion swap sleepover.  Maybe there’s even an idea in a grown up shoe box appeal - remember those? At school when you would go out to Tesco and buy new stationary and toys to fill a box for a boy aged 7-8. I used to love doing them! But I don’t know if it would be cool if you could make up a little package of clothes and unused beauty products for older teenagers. Maybe it already exists?

Actual Eco Clothes/Fabrics:
I have also been looking at the clothing eco-ness for example this and this. The garments are made with eco yarn or organic cotton making a little less impact on the earth. Plus that pink ASOS jumper is SO soft and comfy. I think when people think of eco clothing they think it’s just rough and brown coloured items but there’s actually a whole world of designs and materials out there.

Obviously these are such small efforts but hey I guess we need to start somewhere! I think even styling up outfits in more ways is even a start on the ‘gram. I just think this is a very important subject that’s been playing on my mind a lot and it’s great to think of new ways of re-loving items of clothing.
